According to The New York Times, the social network is determined to roll out its own smartphone ? perhaps to justify its value to Wall Street after a disastrous IPO
Facebook plans to release its own smartphone next year, according to New York Times tech writer Nick Bilton, who cites several Facebook employees and allies. This wouldn't be the newly public social network's first stab at building its own smartphone, or even its second, and not everyone thinks it's a good idea. "Hardware is an extraordinarily difficult, low-margin, commodity business" that "Facebook knows absolutely nothing about," says Henry Blodget at Business Insider. But chief executive Mark Zuckerberg seems determined, reportedly hiring more than half a dozen former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone. Here, five reasons Facebook would actually be wise to build its own handset:
1. Facebook already has an operating system to build on Facebook is essentially?already an operating system with "all of the elements that would be required for a device that could (theoretically at least) challenge Apple's dominance in mobile," says Mathew Ingram at GigaOm. It has your contacts, a calendar, videos, Facebook Messages for email and IM-like communication, a new Facebook Camera app plus Instagram for photos, and it even "recently launched its own Apple-style app store." A Facebook phone is "a logical extension of the walled garden" Facebook and Google have been racing to build to keep you, and your marketable surfing habits, in their respective domains.

2. It has to justify its value to Wall Street "As a newly public company,"?says? The New York Times' Bilton, Facebook "must find new sources of revenue." The company's mobile ad revenue is failing to live up to expectations, and it has to do something dramatic to justify its high stock price. Still, a Facebook phone only makes sense if the company develops its own web browser ? or buys Opera, as rumored ? and search engine, says Tony Bradley at PC World. But with a money-generating Facebook-centric browser and search tool, and a handset to put it on as the default option, Facebook "may have a winner."
3. There's enormous room for growth "You might not buy the Facebook phone, but your kids definitely will," says Drew Olanoff at The Next Web. What Zuckerberg and Co. seem to understand that critics don't is that you can't plan for a bright future "without talking about future generations." And the kids and teens using Facebook now "will want to use Facebook even more, as it replaces their current phone's contact list for social connections." Imagine when someone calls, you get a cheat sheet of conversation starters from their Facebook profiles, says Mukund Mohan at?Be a Force of Good. Heck, "I'd buy a Facebook phone today."

4. Facebook can't afford to fall behind Apple and Google According to one of Bilton's unidentified sources, Zuckerberg is driven by the fear that "if he doesn't create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms." And as Facebook has become more of a rival to its tech peers, and its relationships have soured accordingly, that seems to be a legitimate fear. Google, for example, just dropped $12.5 billion to buy Motorola Mobility, making a Google phone a near inevitability.?
5. It's in the company's DNA A few years ago, critics said Apple would flop in the phone market, says Garry Tan at Garry's Posterous. Obviously, it didn't, and a big reason is that it hired some of the best talent in the world to create the iPhone. That same ability to attract stellar, motivated talent that wants to change the world is "Facebook's biggest asset," too. Besides, with a "visionary founder who is young and in charge," I don't see how Facebook could resist the challenge.

Director tells Empire magazine that his brother Jonathan convinced him 'there would be a great way to do it.' By Kevin P. Sullivan
Anne Hathaway as "Catwoman" Photo: Warner Bros
Christopher Nolan's first two Batman films firmly established the tone and terms of his version of Gotham City. The character would feel more real. Bruce Wayne's gadgets would have basis in actual military technology. Overall, Nolan's Caped Crusader would feel truer to today's world, allowing for parallels to exist more organically.
So it almost seemed out of character when Nolan announced Catwoman and Bane as the two newest additions to the universe in "The Dark Knight Rises." A cat-themed burglar and a luchador-mask-wearing, Venom-dependent super-genius don't naturally fall under the categories of "realistic" and "organic."
In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Nolan opens up about his decision to include Catwoman in his take on the Batman mythos; not surprisingly, it took some convincing on the part of his brother Jonathan.
The brothers Nolan collaborated on the screenplays for "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Dark Knight" with David S. Goyer, and when it came time to decide whether Selina Kyle would make an appearance in the series before it came to a close, Jonathan strongly supported the notion, eventually convincing his older brother of the same.
Why did Jonathan Nolan feel so strongly about including Catwoman? He tells Empire that for their vision of Batman to be complete, they simply couldn't leave her out. "What we're endeavoring to do here is tell a complete take on the Batman mythos. And a complete take of the Batman mythos without the character for me was sacrilegious," Nolan said. "You've gotta have her, because she has a delicious greyness to her that helps define who Batman is. She keeps wavering on this line of, 'Is she a good guy or a bad guy?' Well, she's kind of neither. And that's why, to me, that relationship and that character only enhances the universe — and the Batman character."
But fitting her into the world provides a challenge unto itself. Part of that transformation manifests itself simply in the character's name. According to the article, Selina Kyle is never once referred to as Catwoman in the script. Most of the translation, however, comes with the basic conception of the character.
"Catwoman is a very iconic figure in the Batman pantheon," Christopher Nolan conceded. "I was nervous about how she would fit into our world. But [Jonathan] was very much convinced that there would be a great way to do it and eventually turned me around. Once I got my head around the idea of looking at that character through the prism of our films, saying, 'Who could that person be in real life?' we figured it out. She's a bit of a con-woman, something of a grifter. A hard-edged kind of criminal."

BEIRUT - Syria has strongly denied allegations that its forces killed scores of people ? including women and children ? in one of the deadliest days of the country's uprising, but the U.N. Security Council after an emergency session condemned government forces for shelling residential areas.
The killing of more than 100 people in the west-central area of Houla on Friday brought widespread international criticism of the regime of President Bashar Assad, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame.
The Security Council issued a press statement Sunday that "condemned in the strongest possible terms" the killings in Houla. It blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas. It also condemned the killings of civilians "by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," but avoided saying who was responsible for these attacks.
The council's statement said the "outrageous use of force" against civilians violated international law and Syrian government commitments under previous U.N. resolutions to stop all violence, including the use of heavy weapons in populated areas. It said "those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable," and asked the U.N. observer mission in Syria and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the attacks and report back to the council.
Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack on civilians and pointing the finger at the Syrian government for Friday's massacre. But Russia called for an emergency council meeting saying it first wanted a briefing by Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission.
The massacre in Houla on Friday cast fresh doubts on the ability of an international peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to end Syria's 14-month-old crisis.
The brutality of the killings became clear in amateur videos posted online that showed scores of bodies, many of them young children, in neat rows and covered with blood and deep wounds. A later video showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave.
Mood told the Security Council that U.N. observers at the scene now estimate 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters outside the council chamber. The U.N. counted 49 children and 34 women among the dead.
Activists from the Houla area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels after protests Friday. Some activists said pro-regime thugs later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.
The Syrian government rejected that narrative Sunday, painting a vastly different picture.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine-guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.
The soldiers fought back, but didn't leave their bases, he said.
"No Syrian tank or artillery entered this place where the massacres were committed," he said. "The security forces did not leave their places because they were in a state of self-defence."
He blamed the gunmen for what he called a "terrorist massacre" in Houla and accused the media, Western officials and others of spinning a "tsunami of lies" to justify foreign intervention in Syria.
Makdissi did not provide videos or other evidence to support his version of events, nor did he give a death toll. He said the government had formed a committee to investigate and share its findings with Annan, who is due to visit Damascus in the coming days.
Throughout the uprising, the government has deployed snipers, troops and thugs to quash protests and shelled opposition areas.
A video released by the U.N. team in Syria on Sunday showed observers in Houla the day after the attack, meeting with local rebels and watching residents collect more bodies for burial. It also showed two destroyed armoured personnel carriers ? suggesting that local rebels put up more of a fight than the activists acknowledged.
In a letter to the Security Council, Ban said villages in the Houla area have been outside government control but surrounded by a heavy Syrian military presence.
When U.N. observers visited the area on Saturday, Ban said they saw 85 corpses in a mosque in Taldou and "observed shotgun wounds and wounds consistent with artillery fire." He said "the patrol also saw artillery and tank shells, as well as fresh tank tracks" and observed that "many buildings had been destroyed by heavy weapons."
At U.N. headquarters, Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador Alexander Pankin told reporters as he headed into the closed-door Security Council meeting that "there is substantial ground to believe that the majority of those who were killed were either slashed, cut by knives, or executed at point-blank distance."
"We have to establish whether it was Syrian authorities ... before we agree on something," he said.
A press statement is weaker than a presidential statement, which becomes part of the council record, or a legally binding U.N. resolution, but it must be approved by all 15 members and therefore reflects strong Security Council backing.
Annan's peace plan for Syria, sponsored by the U.N. and the Arab League, is one of the few points of agreement among world powers about Syria's crisis, which began in March 2011 with protests calling for political change. As the government violently cracked down on the uprising, many in the opposition took up arms to defend themselves and attack government troops.
The U.N. put the death toll weeks ago at more than 9,000. Hundreds more have been killed since then.
Daily violence has marred the plan since a cease-fire was supposed to begin April 12. The Houla attack made Friday the deadliest day since the truce was announced, and has cast a shadow over Annan's visit.
In another defiant move, Syria on Sunday denied permission for Annan's deputy to travel to Damascus with his boss, a senior Arab League official said. The rejection of former Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa was intended as a slap to the Arab League, which suspended Syria's membership and approved sanctions against it last year.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Annan's spokesman declined to comment.
The Houla attacks caused outrage among American and international officials that Makdissi's comments Sunday failed to assuage.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would summon Syria's most senior diplomat in the U.K. on Monday so the Foreign Office could "make clear our condemnation of the Syrian regime's actions."
Kuwait, which currently heads the 22-member Arab League, called for an Arab ministerial meeting to "take steps to put an end to the oppressive practices against the Syrian people."
Switzerland's Foreign Ministry urged that an international inquiry be convened, saying the killings "could constitute a war crime."
In Paris, the head of the exile Syrian National Council also condemned the killings.
"The kids of Houla are the kids of all of Syria," Burhan Ghalioun told reporters. "Killing the kids of Houla is like killing the kids of all of Syria."
Anti-regime activists scoffed at the government's version of events. One Houla activist said via Skype that the area had at most 300 fighters, but that none had more than rifles and that they often lacked ammunition.
"If we had anti-tank missiles, there would be no tanks left in the area," said Mohammed, declining to give his full name for fear of retribution.
Activists reported shelling, gunfire and arrest raids in opposition areas throughout the country Sunday as well as clashes between regime forces and rebels in a number of areas. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces killed at least 14 civilians, while rebels killed nine soldiers.
Activist claims could not be independently verified. The Syrian government bars most media from operating in the country.
Annan's plan calls for eventual talks between all sides on a political solution to the crisis.
The U.S. hopes Russia can use its influence with Damascus to press for a political transition similar to that seen in Yemen. In February, longtime Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh passed power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
U.S. officials say Russia does not oppose a political transition in Syria in theory, but has not agreed to specific terms.

Lederer reported from the United Nations. Associated Press writers Adam Schreck in Dubai and Hamza Hendawi in Cairo contributed to this report.
Final Fantasy VII?s Barret isn?t the most level-headed guy. Due to Shinra?s ravaging of his past, this gigantic man-beast has a tenuous grip on his emotions indeed (and a hell of a gun attached to his arm-stump, that bears mentioning too). He isn?t one to pause and apply rational thought to a situation, as we saw in Shinra?s headquarters. Indeed, perhaps my favourite Barret moment is his endeavour to rescue Aeris from the nefarious Hojo. This he achieved by repeatedly firing his gun into some delicate machinery with vigorous gusto. Unconventional, but seemingly effective. The man?s motto, in short, appears to be, ?have a problem in life? Launch some bullets at it!?
As such, it?s quite jarring to find him firing off some top-notch philosophy into our actual faces. When it comes to locomotive metaphors (which it so often does in life, I?m sure?), Barret is your man. In the game, he provided us with such doozies as, ?There ain?t no getting offa this train we on!? Which is, in actuality, rather profound. After all, elements of destiny and the influence of fate are both surely key here. Why else would this ragtag band of adventurers be attempting to combat the threat of Sephiroth and his meteor-summoning shenanigans alone? (I?d venture because the appropriate authorities want to kill them with gas, rendering co-operation more or less moot. But let?s not be pernickety.) Are our heroes bound by something greater, gathered as the chosen few able to defeat him and save the planet? Probably. I can?t imagine useless fatass Palmer doing it, for example. Perhaps, also, Cloud?s experience in the lifestream and discovery of the truth was destined.
Alternatively, Barret simply likes trains, and was being more literal. It?s hard to imagine, as he?s not averse to simply leaping from a speeding locomotive when the situation demands it. (Thus proving himself a liar in the process. There is, after all, a way to get off. Through the open door, like a crazy man.) Even so, judging by his output as a whole, the less intellectual meaning is probably correct. His well-reasoned debate with President Shinra, for example, ended (and began) with his conclusion, ?Y?all Shinra?re the VERMIN, killing the planet! And that makes you King VERMIN! So Shu?up jackass!? Therefore, it seems unlikely that the marshmallow-wearing bear is a philosophical genius after all.
If you?re still unsure, I?ll leave you with some final words from the great man: ?I?ve been here from the beginning, and I still don?t know what the hell?s goin? on.?

Any good contention on budgeting starts with a contention about debt, a tenure simply tangible as something owed.
Recent statistics indicate to a debt-laden America. In 2007, a United States Census Bureau available that 77% of families hold debt, and among families headed by people underneath 35, 83.5% hold debt. While some of this debt is strategic, such as a debt or college loan, increasingly, people spend over their ability to compensate back. It is partial of a reason since some-more than a million people record for failure any year, a authorised move that relieves debt yet comes with consequences such as problem in borrowing income for a home.
Learning how to bill is a pivotal approach to equivocate being saddled with debt, and allows we to be some-more in control of your finances. A bill is a apparatus "used to consider one's financial situation," says Doug Young, executive of a HSBC National Center for Economic and Financial Education during a Council for Economic Education, a nonprofit classification focusing on tyro mercantile and financial education. "Budgeting is critical to get finances straight, to get people out of debt and to get them to a place where they feel financially able to save."
Finding 'Money within Your Money'
David Bakke, editor of Money Crashers Personal Finance, an online apparatus dedicated to personal finance, puts it this way: "The ultimate idea of a bill is to spend reduction income than we earn."
There are several ways to emanate a budgeting system, yet ubiquitous beliefs sojourn a same. At a many elementary level, a bill starts with a record of income earned, contra a record of income spent. If this practice reveals that some-more income is spent than earned, responsible people contingency find ways to retreat a trend.
Budgeting can make a routine of adjusting losses and gain easier. An advantage of budgeting is a ability to "help we find income within your money," records Young. He says that an comment of personal finances will assistance exhibit where adjustments need to be made. For example, if a person's losses are too high, an analysis of losses might exhibit that an overly vast commission of income is going toward party on a weekends. This might be a good area to cut back.
Once we have an bargain of losses and expenditures, and we have finished adjustments to stay within your financial means, we can digest a complement to stay within your budget. Young suggests dual renouned methods: a pouch system, where any pouch represents a spending difficulty and income is appropriated into a envelopes any month; or a cover system, where losses are available according to category. Any additional during a finish of a month can be saved or put toward a destiny purchase.
In a box where spending categories are few, such as with a teen vital during home, Bakke offers a simplified version. "Keep your bill elementary and to a indicate --- one piece of paper with income on one side and spending on a other will do," he says.
It is never too early to set your budget. Bakke suggests that students should start a bill if they accept a poignant stipend or acquire income on their own. It is something his son, Nicholas, a high propagandize tyro during Pinecrest Academy nearby Atlanta, Ga., has already finished for several years.
Nicholas runs a landscaping business and has combined a elementary bill formed on his father's suggestions. "Every time we finish a pursuit and get paid, that income is listed in a income category. Every time we spend money, we enter that into a losses category. If we have a vital squeeze that we am saving adult for --- right now it's for an iPad --- we notate that on my bill so we know where I'm during as distant as saving for that item."
Fighting Frugal Fatigue
The teen's budgeting complement has already paid dividends. Before his iPad goal, Nicholas set his eyes on saving for a Nintendo DS, observant in his bill that a used complement would cost $70. "Each month, we kept lane of my income and spending and always finished certain we had additional leftover to appoint for my Nintendo DS. After 3 months, we finally had adequate income to means it," he adds.
Sometimes staying on a bill requires a longer wait than desired. "We are used to carrying what we want, and it's tough to stay on a bill since it boundary you," says Young. He says that infrequently "frugal fatigue" sets in, where people hold income they shouldn't to prove a wish contra a need.
However, given a high consequences that can come with receiving too most debt --- consequences that can embody detriment of property, missed pursuit opportunities and inability to get destiny loans --- a small stoicism is value it.
Nicholas says his relatives have banned him to possess a credit label until he's 18, yet he adds, "I'm cold with that. we have a withdraw card, and as we get some-more accustomed to regulating it, we know some-more and some-more a dangers of credit label debt," he says. "My recommendation for associate teenagers out there is this: demeanour for ways to beget income early in life, and save as most as we can. Purchase a equipment that we want, yet usually after we can means them."

Ever Thought About Weight Loss Massage?
If you?ve been trying to lose weight, here?s something that you may have never heard of? weight loss massage. It may sound odd, as you don?t normally think of massage and weight loss in the same thought right? However, according to research, if you make it a habit to get a nice massage after you work out then you can actually increase the amount of weight that you lose. Want to know more?
Development and Recovery of Muscles
If you want to be successful with losing weight and you want to get the most out of your workouts then you need to understand muscle recovery and development. After working out, your muscles are fatigued and starving for the nutrients that they need. Massage can help because when you get a massage, you?re increasing the blood circulation in your body. This means that oxygen and nutrients travel to your strained muscles quicker and more efficiently. You probably know that more muscle and well-developed muscles help your body increase metabolism and getting a massage after you work out helps to ensure that you develop those all-important weight-busting muscles that are well-developed.
Muscle Movement Range and Flexibility
That?s not all that a good after-work out massage can do you for you though. It will also help your muscles to allow a wider range of movement and give you more flexibility. In turn, this will help you get more out of each work out? which leads to burning much more calories than before and losing more weight. Being more flexible and having a wider range of motion will also help prevent you from incurring injuries during your workouts.
Getting Rid of Toxic Substances
Some people don?t realize this, but exercising causes your body to start dumping waste products into your blood stream. Some of the waste products we?re talking about here are carbonic acid and lactic acid, both which can dramatically slow down the recovery process for your muscles. The improved circulation you get from a good after work out massage will also help you get rid of these toxic substances. That means recover time is less and you are able to get in more exercise in the long run.
Relaxation
Hey, you make sure that you get to the gym (or the running path, swimming pool or whatever it is that you like to do for your workouts), so why not reward yourself? You?re doing more than a lot of people would do to ensure that you?re healthy. Getting a relaxing massage after your workout isn?t just to feel good though. It helps you physically and mentally at the same time. The level of cortisol in your body is lowered, which is what is often called the stress hormone.? Having a high level of cortisol makes it difficult for your body to digest foods properly and can even impact your metabolism (and not in a good way). Getting rid of as much stress as possible and lowering the levels of cortisol can dramatically help prevent emotional eating, too.

Raspberry Ketone Not JUST a Fat Burner Anymore
Raspberry ketone has been all over the TV shows recently, being aired on many different day time talk shows as well as news broadcasts. By now pretty much anyone has been trying to lose weight for any decent amount of time has heard of it and everyone knows its reputation for being a belly-fat buster. However, what many people don?t realize is that helping you lose weight is not all that this wonderful supplement can do for you. Raspberry ketone supplements can also even help you with baldness and keep your skin elasticity intact.
Being aromatic compounds naturally found within the raspberry fruit, ketones are often used for scentual reasons. People and companies use it to make their products smell better because, hey, it smells good! It?s also used to add flavor to some products. Oddly enough, the chemical make up of raspberry ketones are close to that of the chili pepper plant.
Raspberry ketone?s fat-burning, belly-trimming reputation stems from a Japanese study. Researchers in Japan found that when they fed their lab test animals a diet high in raspberry ketones, they found that they didn?t gain weight and actually lost weight. This is because it makes the body burn off stored fat, which is the culprit of being overweight in the first place.
More recently, it?s been found that raspberry ketone can also likely help increase your skin?s elasticity and even help people battle baldness that stems from alopecia. Again, this is from Japanese researchers (man, what would we do with them?). According to research from the past, capsaicins (like the chili pepper plant) increases hair growth and skin elasticity. So they wanted to test to see if raspberry ketone?s could do the same since they?re so chemically alike.
They used a topical cream in their study, which was controlled. This cream had raspberry ketone extracts in it. They used both humans and mice for the study. The mice saw results for hair grown within merely four weeks. Human participants saw results, too. Half of them saw hair regrowth within five months. But it also increased the elasticity of skin on their cheeks.
So obviously, there?s a strong connection here that researchers are studying even further. Raspberry ketone may not just be the weight loss wonder supplement anymore? it may also soon be the answer for baldness and keeping skin youthful by promoting healthy, natural elasticity.

Dr. Oz Demonstrates How Raspberry Ketone Helps You Lose Weight
While Dr. Oz says he doesn?t normally like to recommend diet ?supplements?, that?s just what he did on his show not too long ago. His rave about how raspberry ketone might just be the answer for a lot of people who are trying to lose weight ended up sparking quite a bit of controversy. On the show, Lisa Lynn shared with audience success stories that she has seen with her clients and being the weight loss expert she is, that gave a lot of solid support to what Dr. Oz had to say.
Dr. Oz portrayed taking raspberry ketone in a very interesting way: he used air balloons (which were meant to symbolize the fat cells in your body) and liquid nitrogen to make them shrivel up into nothing. This is the way to think of what happens to fat cells in your body when you take raspberry ketone. No wonder people all over are losing so much weight with it.
Raspberry ketone?s main ingredient actually does come from raspberries, so it?s natural. One of the biggest factors to consider is that it?s one of the few ingredients that even the USDA recognizes as being generally safe for consumption. Not many diet supplements can say that that USDA supports their ingredients.
Just eating raspberries isn?t going to give you the weight loss results that you want, though. The compound, which is also responsible for the delicious aroma that raspberries give off, is very minimal in the actual raspberry. In fact, Dr. Oz said you?d have to eat almost 100 pounds of berries to get the same amount of the ketones as you get in the supplement. Yes, they?re yummy? but no one wants eat that many raspberries!
Raspberry ketones increase the amount of norepinerphrine and adiponectin in your body, which are hormones. Higher norepinephrine levels equal an increase in your body temperature, which means that your body is going to be burning more fat. Higher adiponectin in your body means that your glucose levels will decrease, which means less glucose being stored energy? combined, you can get some amazing weight loss results.
Of course, Dr. Oz also says that to get the best results with raspberry ketone supplements you should try to exercise and eat a sensible diet? but that?s with anything if you want to truly become healthier. Using diet supplements that come from nature itself is always better than using those that are strictly created in a lab. However, be careful about who you buy your raspberry ketone from. Some companies and retailers surfaced once it started becoming popular that don?t sell the true, original formula. Many are loaded with extra ingredients and don?t have nearly as much of the true ketones as the original.
According to Lisa Lynn, you should start out taking 100mg of raspberry ketone at breakfast time. If you aren?t seeing results pretty soon then start adding another dose at lunchtime and you could start seeing your weight drop in less than a full week.
Need to upgrade your knob & tube wiring, or replace that fusebox with a new breaker panel. ?Insurance companies may demand it, and although expensive, financing help can be found.

Here we go again. Another disruptive TV technology, another major lawsuit.?This time Dish Network and the major TV networks are suing each other over what Dish calls its ?best in class DVR? technology that lets viewers skip over tv commercials with a single click.
?Ultimately, this case is about consumer choice,? said Dish in a complaint filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court. The satellite TV provider wants the court to declare that it is not infringing copyright or breaching the terms of its contracts with Fox, NBC, ABC and CBS. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter reports that Fox has filed a separate suit against Dish to ?aggressively defend the future of free, over-the-air television.?
Dish?s ad-skipping device stands out because, unlike other DVRs, viewers can skip an entire set of commercials rather than fast-forwarding or skipping in 30 second jumps.
The so-called ?ad eraser? may delight consumers, but the TV networks reacted angrily during a conclave with advertisers in New York last week.
?How does Charlie Ergen expect me to produce ?CSI??without commercials?? said chief executive of CBS Corporation, Leslie Moonves, according to the New York Times. (Also, see my colleague Daniel Frankel?s excellent report on the strategy behind Dish?s ?Molotov cocktail? at the broadcasters.)
In its complaint, Dish portrays its technology as a natural extension of existing time-shifting practices and points out that Americans have for decades chosen to disregard ads in one way or another.
Dish also claims that its technology does not alter the broadcasters? signals and that viewers can only skip the ads the day after a show is aired live.
The TV networks are facing significant disruptions?despite receiving new fees that oblige cable and satellite providers to pay them for carrying their over-the-air signals. In addition to its legal tussle with Dish over ad skipping, the TV networks are also suing Aereo, a start-up service that uses tiny antennas to broadcast shows directly to viewers? iPads and iPhones.
With all due respect, I would probably be able to plausibly argue as an astrophysicist (but not a SETI-affiliated one) that I do have "an appreciation of the scale of the universe, the limitations that Einsteinian physics places on communication and exploration of it, the incredible odds of finding coincidental intelligent life in close proximity to us on the kind of time scale and size scale of a 14 billion year old, 14 billion light year diameter universe". After 35 years in the field, Jill Tarter probably does, too.
Your position is not an unreasonable one to adopt, even if I think that characterizing SETI as "just a time sink for big children" is unfair, sounds fairly juvenile itself and makes your argument sound weaker than it actually is.
I personally feel, however, that while the SETI effort is like looking for a nearby needle in universe full of haystacks (and the SETI folk have never claimed otherwise), the cultural, philosophical and other implications of scoring an admittedly spectacularly unlikely "hit" are worth the relatively modest investment. A big chunk of SETI's money already comes from private donations these days, anyway, and a lot more public money has been wasted on totally pointless things totally lacking the world-changing implications of something like SETI.
And in the meantime, they've (at the very least) been able to do some interesting things in terms of radio telescope technology and other research, and inspired a bunch of kids and adults to think enthusiastically about science.
Are your front-end and back-end functions well integrated? Imagine two people trying to carry a rolled up carpet out of the room, but neither of them pays attention to what the other one is doing. As a result, they end up knocking off one another or walking off in a totally different direction, dropping the carpet. You don't want this to happen to your business operations, do you?
If you want to stay competitive in your industry, you need to make sure that you utilize the latest IT infrastructure that will not only keep your small business at par with other businesses but will also give you an edge over your competition.
With your front end and back end properly integrated, you can ensure improved productivity and business efficiency. In addition, B2B EcommerceSoftware helps small businesses in a variety of ways:

Using online B2B software is very easy and intuitive so you don't have to invest a lot of time and energy in learning a completely new system.
No System Management, No Worries: One of the biggest drawbacks of using stand-alone ERP systems is that you'd need to take back up of your system from time to time, otherwise you risk losing your business information. Thanks to regular maintenance, online e-business software is absolutely safe and you'd never have to worry about taking back up. Scientists on NASA's asteroid sample return mission, Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx), have measured the orbit of their destination asteroid, 1999 RQ36, with such accuracy they were able to directly measure the drift resulting from a subtle but important force called the Yarkovsky effect the slight push created when the asteroid absorbs sunlight and re-emits that energy as heat.
"The new orbit for the half-kilometer (one-third mile) diameter 1999 RQ36 is the most precise asteroid orbit ever obtained," said OSIRIS-REx team member Steven Chesley of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. He presented the findings May 19 at the Asteroids, Comets and Meteors 2012 meeting in Niigata, Japan.
Observations that Michael Nolan at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico made in September 2011, along with Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations made in 1999 and 2005, when 1999 RQ36 passed much closer to Earth, show that the asteroid has deviated from its gravity-ruled orbit by roughly 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, in the last 12 years, a deviation caused by the Yarkovsky effect.
The Yarkovsky effect is named for the nineteenth-century Russian engineer who first proposed the idea that a small rocky space object would, over long periods of time, be noticeably nudged in its orbit by the slight push created when it absorbs sunlight and then re-emits that energy as heat.
"The Yarkovsky force on 1999 RQ36 at its peak, when the asteroid is nearest the sun, is only about a half ounce about the weight of three grapes on Earth. Meanwhile, the mass of the asteroid is estimated to be about 68 million tons. You need extremely precise measurements over a fairly long time span to see something so slight acting on something so huge."
Nolan and his team measured the distance between the Arecibo Observatory and 1999 RQ36 to an accuracy of 300 meters, or about a fifth of a mile, when the asteroid was 30 million kilometers, or 20 million miles, from Earth.
"That's like measuring the distance between New York City and Los Angeles to an accuracy of two inches, and fine enough that we have to take the size of the asteroid and of Arecibo Observatory into account when making the measurements," Nolan said.
Chesley and his colleagues used the new Arecibo measurements to calculate a series of 1999 RQ36 approaches closer to Earth than 7.5 million kilometers (4.6 million miles) from the years 1654 to 2135. There turned out to be 11 such encounters.
By combining the radar results from Arecibo Observatory with infrared results from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the scientists also learned that asteroid 1999 RQ36 is very light it has around the same density as water, Chesley reported.
"This study is an important step in better understanding the Yarkovsky effect a subtle force that contributes to the orbital evolution of new Near-Earth Objects," said Dante Lauretta, the mission's principal investigator and professor of planetary science at the University of Arizona.
Lauretta added that "this information is critical for assessing the likelihood of an impact from our target asteroid and provides important constraints on its mass and density, allowing us to substantially improve our mission design."
The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is to launch in 2016, reach asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 in 2019, examine it up close during a 505-day rendezvous, then return at least 60 grams (~1.9 ounces) of it to Earth in 2023.
"In addition to the exciting Yarkovsky results, the low density shows that 1999 RQ36 is probably a loose aggregate of rocks--a so called rubble pile," said Jason Dworkin, the mission's project scientist and Chief of Astrochemistry at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This makes it an ideal target for OSIRIS-REx to collect loose surface material."
