Microsoft will probably trim the number of Windows 8 editions it will sell later this year, but won't mimic Apple's online-only approach to OS upgrades, a retail sales analyst said last week.

In developed countries, including the U.S., Microsoft offers Windows 7 in four SKUs, or editions: Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. All but Enterprise -- available only to volume licensees such as major corporations -- are sold to the general public.

Evidence uncovered by ZDNet blogger Stephen Chapman -- who found a list of Windows 8 SKUs on a pair of Hewlett-Packard support documents -- hints at just three editions of the upcoming OS: a generic "Windows 8," Professional and Enterprise.

Missing from that list: Ultimate.

"There had been interest in Windows 7 Ultimate," said Stephen Baker, an analyst with the NPD Group, but sales were skimpy and vastly outnumbered by Home Premium and Professional.

Baker expects that, if Microsoft does produce a Windows 8 Ultimate edition, it would be an OEM-only SKU. In other words, Microsoft would drop it from retail and offer it only to computer makers to pre-install on high-end PCs.

The two retail editions for Windows 8 will most likely be Home Premium -- perhaps renamed -- for consumers, and Professional for businesses or consumers who need to connect to their workplace network, said Baker.

Enterprise would remain as the upgrade SKU dealt to volume license customers.

Microsoft's Pattern

Dropping Ultimate from the Windows 8 list would fit with Microsoft's demotion of that edition in Windows 7. Three years ago and several months before Windows 7 launched, Microsoft confirmed that it was dropping the heavily-criticized "Ultimate Extras" from the version.

Microsoft first pitched Ultimate Extras in the Ultimate edition of Windows Vista, but buyers blasted the company for a sluggish release pace of the add-ons that Extras had promised.

Windows 7 came in two other editions -- Starter and Home Basic -- but both were exiled to emerging markets as part of Microsoft's strategy to offer lower-priced versions that could better compete with the rampant piracy in some countries. The company could retain those developing-markets-only SKUs for Windows 8.

Microsoft has not yet disclosed how many versions of Windows 8 for PCs it will sell, and today declined to share more information about its plans.

An announcement of the Windows 8 lineup could come next week. Microsoft will host a Windows 8 launch event in Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday, Feb. 29, when it's also expected to release the Consumer Preview .

Although Microsoft revealed the names of its Windows 7 SKUs in early February 2009, nearly nine months before launching the operating system in late October, the company is on a slower pace for Windows 8 than it used then. For example, Windows 8's Consumer Preview will appear almost two months later than the early January 2009 ship date of Windows 7's first public beta.

Upgrade Strategy

One thing Microsoft won't do, said Baker, is follow Apple's lead and sell Windows 8 upgrades only online. Last year, Apple sold OS X Lion almost exclusively through the Mac App Store, and recently said it would use the e-market later this year to distribute the Mountain Lion upgrade .

"The [Windows] ecosystem is very different from Apple's, so no, I don't think they would go to that extent," said Baker.

Windows 8 will include Microsoft's new Windows Store mart as the sole channel for Metro-style apps -- and some traditional x86/64 Windows software -- but the firm hasn't said whether Windows 7 users will be able to access the store, and thus make it a destination for upgrade downloads.

With the new store's emphasis on Metro apps, Baker doubted that Microsoft would use that channel to sell Windows 8 upgrades -- people with access to the store would, by definition, already be using the operating system -- but acknowledged that the e-store could be used to deliver future upgrades to Windows 8 users.

Instead, Baker said, Microsoft will continue to include brick-and-mortar retail stores in its delivery mix.

"Microsoft wants to be where the customers want to buy," Baker said. "And the key card approach they used [with Office] cut a lot of the costs of being in stores."

Microsoft sold some upgrades of Office 2010 at retail minus installation media, instead including a small credit card-sized piece of plastic -- called "Product Key Cards" -- that unlocked downloaded versions of the suite or added features to the OEM-preloaded Office Starter 2010.

Windows 8 upgrades could be sold using Product Key Cards to activate downloaded trials, or Microsoft could continue to sell electronic editions through its current e-store , where it now sells Windows 7.

Microsoft has not set definitive system requirements for Windows 8 upgrades -- much less prices -- but has indicated that the new OS will run on PCs now powered by either Vista or Windows 7.

Rick Santorum, playing the religion card, appears to be winning support of evangelical Christians ahead of potentially pivotal GOP primaries in Arizona and Michigan.?

The language of personal faith appears to be helping GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum turn lingering doubts among Protestant evangelicals about Mitt Romney's Mormonism (and even President Obama's Christianity) into a poll surge.

Mr. Santorum, the former US senator from Pennsylvania, was excoriated by pundits this week, after a 2008 speech to Ave Maria University surfaced in which he suggested that Satan is waging a ?spiritual war? on the United States. Earlier in the week, Santorum, a Roman Catholic and staunch social conservative, talked about Mr. Obama adhering to ?phony theology,? a quip that Santorum later insisted wasn't about the president's faith but about his support of ?radical environmentalism.?

Then the Rev. Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, added to the controversy by suggesting he couldn't ?categorically? say whether Obama, who has repeatedly stated that he's a Christian, may be totally genuine in his Christian beliefs. He also said, when asked about Romney's faith, that most evangelicals don't consider Mormonism to be a Christian faith.

Amid an unusually unsettled nomination process, the focus on faith may be just the latest example in which a candidate attempts to draw a distinction for undecided voters while forcing his competitors to defend their beliefs.?Voters will ultimately decide whether a candidate's theology is a valid issue in a political campaign, or whether the debate should stick to concerns such as jobs, the economy, and illegal immigration.

At the same time, Santorum is striking a chord with religious voters. He has nearly doubled his support among white, evangelical Republican voters in the past month, going from 22 percent support in mid-January to 41 percent by Feb. 15, according to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. While a higher percentage of mainline Protestants support Mitt Romney, 21 percent now support Santorum, up from 9 percent in mid-January.

Persuading Christian conservatives, and evangelical Protestants in particular, that he shares their morals may pay off for Santorum in next Tuesday's pivotal primaries in Arizona and Michigan. But religious probing is also a way for voters, traditionally, to take stock of candidates' values and beliefs.

?American religions serve as a proxy for morality, and what we really want to know is whether or not our presidential candidates are good, decent, honorable people,? says Randall Balmer, a professor of American religion at Columbia University, in New York. ?The flawed premise, of course, is that somebody who does not have religious affiliation cannot be a moral person, and that's demonstrably false. But we don't know how to ask the question in any other way.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michigan has become squirm central for Republican presidential candidates who are trying to explain their opposition to the auto bailout before the big primary in the home of automakers. Their tale is terribly tangled, and President Barack Obama isn't telling it straight either.

Obama, in taking credit, and Republicans, in assigning blame, have ignored one driving force behind the love-it-or-hate-it bailout: George W. Bush in the waning days of his presidency. Moreover, GOP rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum would have people believe the United Auto Workers union runs General Motors and the government "gave" it away, neither true.

The issue is a particularly nettlesome one for Romney, Detroit-born son of a Michigan governor and auto company chief executive. His provocatively headlined 2008 article, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," has made for tortured explanations in the campaign for the Feb. 28 primary ? though the prescription he preached back then is not wholly at odds with what the government finally did.

Then again, Romney is hardly out on a Republican limb. Santorum opposes the bailout on similar grounds. As for the other candidates, Newt Gingrich raised the wild idea that Washington might force people to buy GM cars, and Ron Paul believes the market should let companies rise or fall without the government's intervention.

A look at some of the persistent claims about the bailout and how they compare with the facts:

ROMNEY: "If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won't go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed." ? Nov. 18, 2008, New York Times op-ed article.

SANTORUM: "If they'd have gone through the orderly bankruptcy process, gone through a structured bankruptcy, they'd have come out in the same place, only we would have kept the integrity of the bankruptcy process without the government putting its fingers into it." ? June 13 New Hampshire debate.

THE FACTS: No one can know what would have happened absent the bailout. But it's a distinctly minority view that the private sector, raked then by the financial crisis, would have nursed Detroit back to health without a massive infusion of federal aid. In late 2008, banks weren't making many loans, much less to companies that were out of cash. The Bush administration moved fast because it saw no time to let an orderly bankruptcy unfold, even if banks had the money and the will to steer automakers through the process.

Romney's grim prognosis, before GM and Chrysler took the aid, is in stark contrast with the turnaround that followed. Last week GM reported a record profit for 2011, two years after the company's near-collapse, and said 47,500 union workers will get $7,000 profit-sharing checks, the most ever.

Despite the bold headline ? now making headlines of its own ? Romney laid out some nuanced ideas, including substantial federal aid.

He called for the government to guarantee post-bankruptcy financing and to back up warranties so people would not be afraid to buy cars from the fragile companies. And he proposed a fivefold increase in federal research spending on energy.

OBAMA: "On the day I took office, our auto industry was on the verge of collapse. Some even said we should let it die. With a million jobs at stake, I refused to let that happen. In exchange for help, we demanded responsibility. We got workers and automakers to settle their differences. We got the industry to retool and restructure. Today, General Motors is back on top as the world's No. 1 automaker. Chrysler has grown faster in the U.S. than any major car company. Ford is investing billions in U.S. plants and factories. And together, the entire industry added nearly 160,000 jobs. We bet on American workers. We bet on American ingenuity. And tonight, the American auto industry is back." ? Jan. 24 State of the Union speech.

THE FACTS: Lost in Obama's victory lap was the fact that Bush passed him the baton.

Pushing against a reluctant Congress, Bush steered $17.4 billion in emergency loans to GM and Chrysler in his final weeks in office, on condition they shrink debt, negotiate wage and benefit cuts with workers and submit plans to achieve "long-term viability, international competitiveness and energy efficiency."

The new Obama administration followed with more than $60 billion in aid, more expansive requirements and hands-on management of the crisis.

With hundreds of thousands of jobs at stake, ideology took a back seat. "Sometimes circumstances get in the way of philosophy," Bush said in a speech this month. "I didn't want there to be 21 percent unemployment."

Steven Rattner, who led Obama's auto task force, credited Bush with giving his team "a little breathing room" to restructure the companies and for providing a framework of "expected sacrifices that paved the way for our demands for give-ups from the stakeholders."

Obama's account of the automakers' recovery is true enough but skips key points.

For one, "we" had nothing to do with Ford, which declined a bailout and climbed back on its own. Second, viewers of the speech might not know that Chrysler is an Italian-owned company now.

Obama frequently invokes the unspecified "some" who thought the industry "should die" in what is a veiled swipe at Republicans who oppose the bailout, Romney prominently among them. But like the other GOP candidates, Romney never expressed a death wish for the auto industry. Nor did Republican congressional leaders.

At most, some were willing to take that risk by having automakers try to restructure in bankruptcy without a bailout. It's a course few believed would work in 2008. But bankruptcy is intended as a second chance, not an execution. It's the path Obama followed, though with massive federal aid that sweetened the odds.

ROMNEY: "The idea of billions of dollars being wasted initially ? then finally they adopted the managed bankruptcy. I was among others that said we ought to do that. And then after that, they gave the company to the UAW. They gave General Motors to the UAW and they gave Chrysler to Fiat." ? Nov. 10 Michigan debate.

THE FACTS: These are distorted accounts of complex arrangements by which the companies, unions, government and courts fashioned a plan to lighten staggering health care and pension costs at the heart of the automakers' decline.

A trust owned by the United Auto Workers ? but not directly managed by the union ? received a 17.5 percent ownership stake in GM in return for taking over the health care costs of blue-collar retirees. That stake declined as the company left government ownership by selling stock to the public; it's now about 10 percent. In return for its share, the UAW could not strike over wages at Chrysler or GM in the last round of contract talks, and it gave other concessions too.

Just as the government did not give GM to the union, it did not give Chrysler to Fiat.

Chrysler and Fiat have paid back all but $1.3 billion of Chrysler's $12.5 billion bailout ? with taxpayers likely to be out the rest. The Italian automaker got control of Chrysler by buying 23.5 percent of the company from the U.S. and Canadian governments, after receiving an initial 20 percent stake in exchange for management expertise and technology, then 15 percent for meeting performance targets.

The government has recouped more than $22 billion of its nearly $50 billion GM bailout, after agreeing to take stock in return for most of its investment. The government would get an additional $13.5 billion if it sold its remaining stock at current value. It is waiting for the stock price to rise before doing so, meaning the final cost to taxpayers is unknown.
