Top women's secret to success: Title IX

La Salle University

Jennifer Ngo, now a special agent for the FBI, during her playing days at La Salle University

By Eve Tahmincioglu

Jennifer Ngo, 32, a special agent for the FBI, played basketball when she was in college. Elyse Darefsky, 54, an IT manager at Cigna, was a big collegiate volleyball and basketball player. And Sarah Ann Slater, 23, who starts graduate school at the London School of Economics in the fall, was a junior tennis champ.

All three women credit sports for their achievements beyond the playing field, and studies show playing sports in your youth can indeed contribute to future career success.

?For me, it was about being part of something bigger than yourself,? said Ngo, who also played soccer growing up. ?As I got older, it helped me with my career.?

Their experiences point to how important it is for girls to have opportunities in athletics.?They also?underscore the significance of Title IX, which paved the way for more gender equity in high school and college sports, and celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.

Engaging in sports in youth can help women, and men, attain career success later in life, and many prominent women often point to that experience as a reason for their ability to climb the ladder.

Irene Rosenfeld, CEO of Kraft Foods, played everything from field hockey to basketball when she was in high school; former Alaska governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin touted her sporting past as a basketball player for the Wasilla Warriors; and SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro was a lacrosse player in college.

As Title IX celebrates its 40th anniversary, hear from three women who've seen the battle from all sides.

Of her lacrosse background at Franklin & Marshall College, where she captained the first varsity team in 1977, Schapiro told Lacrosse Magazine in the March issue, that the game helped her professional life.

?Lacrosse is truly a team endeavor,? she said. ?You have work together, you have to be constantly mindful of where your teammates are, you have to be willing to be in the supporting role, you have to be able to read signals and be prepared to regroup ? all of these are important to workplace success. It also taught me to take risks.?

According to a report by research firm Catalyst published in May, 82 percent of women executives played organized sports after elementary school, and nearly 60 percent said it gave them ?a competitive edge over others in the business world.??

Learning how to compete is among the top life skills youth sport members gain from their participation, according to research from Boston University?s School of Education published last year.

There is ?a direct transfer of life skills from sport to work,? found the research titled ?Career Success and Life Skill Development Through Sports,? which was part of a doctoral thesis by Gavin Bruce Barton.

He found that besides competitiveness, sports participation also developed an individual?s work ethic, ability to handle pressure, resilience, teamwork and confidence.

Surprisingly, the study also found, that ?sport participation as a source of life skill development was cited far more frequently than family, work or education.?

And, the author added, ?Life skills developed in sport can contribute to later work success.?

You don?t have to tell Cigna?s Darefsky?s that. ?I learned more playing sports than I did in school,? she explained. ?I was an introvert, and the confidence that you gain playing sports, you can?t measure that.?

She recalled going on her first job interview at Cigna in her final year of college, right after her basketball team at Clark University had a huge win over Dartmouth. ?It gave me a sense of confidence,? she said, allowing her to nail the interview.

Slater, the recent grad who played tennis, also has seen the benefits.

Courtesy of Sarah Ann Slater

?Being a part of sports actively in my youth and throughout my adolescence really taught me a lot about discipline, time management, and taking responsibility for myself and my own successes or failures,? she said. ?Even though I am not active in competitive sports any more I?was able to successfully transfer those skills into other arenas of my life, mainly academics as a college student, and they continue to be a part of all decisions I make as I go forward with my life.?

Clearly, youth sports can be an ultimate career boon, and Title IX has opened the door for?many women to participate and then reap the future benefits, said Marilyn Strawbridge, professor of physical education at Butler University in Indianapolis, who has studied the impact of sports on women.

Despite the law?s success, however, we have a long way to go when it comes to ensuring more girls get some serious locker room time, an experience that will only help them as they go out into the work world.

?Title IX has been wonderful but there?s still parity to be reached,? stressed Strawbridge. ?Unfortunately we?re still seeing lower rates of sports participation by girls in high school and college and they still get a smaller part of the athletics dollar.?

And that?s a problem given the payoff sports engagement offers women later in their careers and in their lives overall, she pointed out.

?Women in sports are better equipped to view themselves as equals; they know how to compete and put themselves out there, and take risks for something better,? she explained. ?They live with consequence and are healthier individuals all the way around, mentally and physically.?

Big Ten Football Top 150 Players: No. 98, Bri'Onte Dunn, Ohio State RB

No. 98: Bri'Onte Dunn, No. 25, RB, Ohio State
2011 Stats:?1,657 yards, 17 touchdowns (GlenOak HS, Canton, OH)

Strengths

Dunn is one of the crown jewels of the 2012 recruiting class, and it's easy to see why. He's already listed at 6'1" and 214 pounds (and expect that second number to rise over the next 18 months), he's fast and he's a powerful runner.

More importantly, he's already on campus, having graduated high school early and enrolled at Ohio State for the spring semester. He has serious future All-American potential. Just watch.

Moreover, not only did Dunn get on campus early, he got on at essentially the same time the new offensive staff did. In other words, the other tailbacks don't have however many extra years of experience with the new playbook that Dunn doesn't have. It's a first-year offense for all of them, so there's equal footing.

?

Weaknesses

Still, we are talking about a true freshman here, and for all the talent Dunn brings to the table, Ohio State's not hurting for depth at tailback. Jordan Hall and Carlos Hyde are atop the depth chart for now, and former top RB recruit Rod Smith is also in the mix. Urban Meyer told CantonRep.com said Dunn will likely play in 2012, but for now, all Meyer brought up was special teams and "some snaps."

?

2012 Prediction

There's a greater-than-zero chance that Dunn cracks the two-deep this year, considering the somewhat lackluster performances of Hall and Hyde in 2011. Granted, that was more about being cogs in an inefficient offense and less about being bad running backs, but you don't look at either of those guys as potential Heisman candidates down the road. Dunn's the one with that potential.

That said, if Hall, Hyde and Smith all stay healthy for most of the year, Dunn's production is going to be a casualty of scarcity. Thus, it'll take either a mammoth fall practice performance or a significant injury (or two) in front of him to get Dunn to 100 carries on the year, but even in a full backfield, Dunn should see about five per game and use the opportunity to rush for about five yards a pop or so.

That's the thing, though. Breakthrough performances in summer/fall camp by 5-star players and injuries for running backs are not exactly rare in college football. So, the ceiling's a lot higher than 50-60 carries for Dunn, even if it'll take some luck getting there.

Palestinians win endangered world heritage status for Bethlehem church

Unesco has granted endangered world heritage status and funding for repairs to the site seen as Jesus's birthplace in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, despite objections from the US and Israel.

Israeli officials have questioned the need for Bethlehem to be registered as an endangered site and see Palestinian moves at Unesco and other UN bodies as an effort to embarrass Israel on the world stage.

Thirteen out of 21 members of the world heritage committee voted in favour of the move at a meeting in St Petersburg. The decision was met by a standing ovation. Six members voted against and two abstained.

The fourth-century Church of the Nativity, built over a grotto where Christian tradition says Jesus was born, needs repairs but the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, is short of funds.

The Palestinian Authority's request included part of the Pilgrimage Route, the path which tradition says Joseph and Mary took into the city in their trek from Nazareth 2,000 years ago.

Palestinians had pointed to what they describe as the dangers of Israeli occupation and cited in particular Israel's 2002 siege of the Church of the Nativity, where militants took sanctuary during a Palestinian uprising. Violence has subsided in recent years and more than two million people now visit the church annually.

Independent experts sent by Unesco to examine the church recommended turning down the request, saying that while the church roof needed patching up the shrine could not be considered "to have been severely damaged or to be under imminent threat".

Friday's meeting in St Petersburg was attended by the Palestinian foreign minister. The Palestinian Authority has viewed its entry into Unesco as a strategic milestone before the broader international recognition it seeks for a future state.

"This gives hope and confidence to our people on the inevitable victory of our just cause," said the prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in a statement following the decision.

"It increases their determination to continue efforts at deepening readiness for the establishment of an independent state of Palestine, with its capital in East Jerusalem within the 1967 borders," Fayyad said.

"This is an irresponsible decision," said Gideon Koren, Israel's vice-president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites. The US ambassador to Unesco, David Killion, said he was "profoundly disappointed by the decision".

The Palestinian government plans to register about 20 more sites with Unesco, including the ancient city of Jericho and the archaeological site of Sebastia, and has dismissed Israel's accusations.

"Our goal is to preserve and safeguard these sites in spite of the threat from Israeli occupation," Hanan Ashrawi, head of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation's department of culture and information, said.

Last year, Unesco granted the Palestinians full membership, a decision seen at the time as a boost to their bid, since largely stalled, to win unilateral statehood recognition from the United Nations in the absence of peace talks with Israel.

Israel and the US, which subsequently cut off its $80m (?50m) annual funding of Unesco, condemned the decision, saying peace negotiations ? which collapsed in 2010 ? were the only path to a Palestinian state. (Writing by Gleb Bryanski; Editing by Louise Ireland)

As Syria writhes, divided powers meet in Geneva

GENEVA (Reuters) - Foreign ministers of world powers gather in Geneva on Saturday to try and forge a common strategy to end the bloodshed in Syria, but differences between Russia and the West may thwart them.

Kofi Annan, the former U.N. chief who is special international envoy on Syria, has been hoping for consensus on a plan for a unity government that, by excluding from the leadership figures deemed too divisive, would effectively mean President Bashar al-Assad stepping down.

However, Moscow, a long-time ally of the Syrian strongman and an opponent in principle of what it sees as foreign meddling in domestic sovereignty, has voiced objections to any solution "imposed" on Syria from outside, while the United States and its European and Arab allies see no way ahead with Assad in power.

After Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met over dinner in St. Petersburg on Friday, Lavrov echoed Annan's own earlier upbeat assessment of the chances of agreement, but a senior U.S. official sounded less confident and said differences remained.

"We have a very good chance to find common ground at the conference in Geneva tomorrow," Lavrov told reporters, while also warning against what he called a counterproductive effort to dictate the outcome of a political transformation in advance.

His deputy, Gennady Gatilov, later tweeted Moscow's view of forcing Assad aside: "Our Western partners want to determine themselves the results of the political process in Syria," he said. "However, this is a matter for the Syrians themselves."

Nonetheless, Lavrov said he detected some flexibility on Clinton's part on the eve of talks due to start at U.N. offices in Geneva around 10 a.m. (0800 GMT): "I felt a change in Hillary Clinton's position. There were not ultimatums," he said.

"Not a word was said that the document we will discuss in Geneva cannot be touched," he said, a few hours after senior officials in Geneva failed to arrive at a compromise that could be presented to the foreign ministers for approval on Saturday.

A senior U.S. State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity after the meeting in St. Petersburg, said respect for Annan meant the ministers would still attend.

"There are still areas of difficulty and difference," the official said. But as for the chances of an accord in Geneva, the official added: "We may get there; we may not."

POWERS CONFERENCE

The foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council - Russia, the United States, China, France and Britain - will attend Saturday's talks along with counterparts from regional powers Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq as well as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Nabil Elaraby, the secretary-general of the Arab League.

Annan is seeking backing for a proposal that does not explicitly state that Assad must step down, but does call for a unity government which would exclude figures who jeopardize stability.

Diplomats have said that Russia proposed changes on Thursday to Annan's plan for a national unity government, despite initially supporting it, but the United States, Britain and France rejected the amendments.

Annan, who brokered a much abused ceasefire in April, said early on Friday he was "optimistic" that the Geneva talks would produce an acceptable outcome. Later, senior officials holding preparatory talks there failed to overcome differences. Western diplomats said Russia was pressing for changes to Annan's text.

Russian diplomats said the work continued but they would not "impose" a solution on Syria.

Moscow has vetoed Security Council resolutions condemning the Syrian government over its crackdown on protests which began 15 months ago and have turned into something close to civil war with a sectarian tinge. The U.N. estimates at least 10,000 people have been killed.

Russia, and China, both conscious of the risk of internal revolt at home, have objected to what they see as Western interference in the domestic affairs of rulers like Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.

Western governments, however, have shown little will to repeat last year's Libyan experience of military support for Arab rebels in Syria, where Assad's forces are formidable and the complexities of religion and ethnicity much greater.

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed.

Assad on Thursday dismissed the notion of any outside solution to the crisis which has imperiled his family's four decades in power: "We will not accept any non-Syrian, non-national model, whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries.

"No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do."

TANKS, HELICOPTERS

On the ground in Syria, fighting continued on Friday, with particular tension around the northern border with Turkey, a week after Syria shot down a Turkish warplane.

Syrian helicopter gunships bombarded a strategic town in the north and tanks moved close to the commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels said. But Syrian troops kept well clear of new Turkish air defenses installed to curb Syrian action near its borders.

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made clear Assad would be risking what he called the "wrath" of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.

Erdogan told a rally in the eastern city of Erzurum on Friday, broadcast by Turkish television: "We will not hesitate to teach a lesson to those who aim heavy weapons at their own people and at neighboring countries."

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army, is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.

(AP) ? Grinning and waving, 14 women who survived the horrors of World War II paraded Thursday in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of being crowned Israel's first "Miss Holocaust Survivor."

Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.

"It sounds totally macabre to me," said Colette Avital, chairwoman of Israel's leading Holocaust survivors' umbrella group. "I am in favor of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading (survivors) with beautiful clothes is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful."

Pageant organizer Shimon Sabag rejected the criticism, saying the winners were chosen based on their personal stories of survival and rebuilding their lives after the war, and physical beauty was only a tiny part of the competition.

"They feel good together. They are having a good time and laughing in the rehearsals," said Sabag, director of Yad Ezer L'Haver, or Helping Hand, which assists needy Holocaust survivors and organized the pageant.

"The fact that so many wanted to participate proves that it's a good idea."

Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition and contestants were whittled down to the 14 finalists who appeared Thursday.

The contest, part of Helping Hand's annual "cultural" night, included a lavish dinner and music at a Haifa reception hall. Some 600 people attended, including two Cabinet ministers, Moshe Kahlon and Yossi Peled, himself a Holocaust survivor.

The women, ranging in age from 74 to 97, clearly enjoyed themselves. Wearing black dresses, earrings and necklaces, and sporting blue-and-white numbered sashes, they grinned and waved as they were introduced to the adoring audience. Music played as the contestants walked along a red carpet, introduced themselves and described their memories of World War II.

"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.

A four-judge panel consisting of three former beauty queens and a geriatric psychiatrist who specializes in treating Holocaust survivors chose the winner. Hava Hershkovitz, a soon-to-be 79-year-old, was banished from her home in Romania in 1941 and sent to a detention camp in the Soviet Union for three years. Today, she lives in an assisted living home run by Helping Hand.

"This place is full of survivors. It puts us at the center of attention so people will care. It's not easy at this age to be in a beauty contest, but we're all doing it to show that we're still here," the silver-haired Hershkovitz said.

Wearing a glittering tiara, she was joined by her granddaughter, Keren Hazan. "I'm very proud of her because she's the most beautiful woman in the room tonight," Hazan said.

In addition to the contestants' accounts of surviving Nazi ghettos and concentration camps, their later contributions to their communities were also considered, Sabag said. Physical appearance was maybe "10 percent" of the criteria, he said, though a cosmetics company was recruited to help the women dress up for the occasion.

"We always tell them to dress well and look good. To think positive and to take care of themselves," Sabag said. "Always look at life with a smile and continue to live."

The thought that physical appearance could even remotely be a factor rubbed some the wrong way. Avital, of the Holocaust survivors' umbrella group, criticized the cosmetics company, saying it was using Holocaust survivors in a cheap marketing stunt to promote their products.

"Why use a beauty contest to show that these people survived and that they're brave?" wondered Lili Haber, a daughter of Holocaust survivors who heads an Israeli organization that assists survivors from Poland. "I think it's awful. I think it's something a decent person shouldn't even think about."

The Holocaust, in which Nazi Germany oversaw the systematic slaughter of 6 million European Jews, plays a unique role in Israeli society. The country gained independence in the wake of the Holocaust, serving as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of people who survived the genocide.

Nearly 200,000 aging survivors live in Israel today, and the country's annual Holocaust Day is one of the most solemn occasions on the calendar. Restaurants and cinemas close, and the country comes to a standstill as sirens wail for two minutes. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, frequently make references to the Holocaust when discussing the threat they believe a nuclear-armed Iran would pose to the Jewish state.

Thursday's contest was among the many unconventional beauty pageants that have sprouted up over the years. The war-torn countries of Angola and Cambodia have held "Miss Landmine" contests for survivors of land mine explosions, Star Trek fans enjoy the "Miss Klingon Empire" contest in Atlanta, and plus-sized women in Thailand compete for the honor of "Miss Jumbo Queen." There are also a senior citizens' pageants in the U.S.

Gal Mor, editor of the popular Israeli blog "Holes in the Net," said Thursday's pageant was well-intentioned but misguided.

"Why should a decayed, competitive institution that emphasizes women's appearance be used as inspiration, instead of allowing them to tell their story without gimmicks?" he wrote. "This is one step short of 'Survivor-Holocaust' or 'Big Brother Auschwitz.' It leaves a bad taste. Holocaust survivors should be above all this."

Family tragedy becomes public when death video hits Twitter

2 hrs.

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.

You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other in Dutch, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?

At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.

Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.

This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?

When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"

It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.

"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.

The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?

Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?

According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.

The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.

Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.

Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.

"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."

The American Library Association website offers a variety of resources to help parents and kids navigate the Internet safely and responsibly. ?

If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help right away:

  • Call your doctor?s office.
  • Call 911 for emergency services.
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Visit the website or call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at?1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)?to be connected to a trained counselor at a suicide crisis center nearest you.

Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the hospital.

High-tech help at Folklife Festival to explore, share stories about ?

When the quilt was here 16 years ago, the entire thing stretched across the Mall. At 1.3 million square feet, organizers say today?s quilt is too large to be displayed in full.

Most of the panels sent in come from friends, family or loved ones of those who died of HIV/AIDS. At the onset of the project in 1987, organizers believed the disease would be cured and the squares would be taken apart and sent back within five years, said Julie Rhoad, NAMES Project Foundation executive director.

Rhoad said the foundation has made a lot of progress in 25 years towards educating the public, but there still is not a cure.

?I think that we?ve come a long way,? Rhoad said, ?but the question is: ?Do we settle on where we are right now???

Almost 35,000 people were diagnosed with AIDS in 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though medication exists to slow HIV from becoming AIDS, the agency says these treatments must be taken daily for the rest of the patient?s life.

?The least among us don?t have access to quality care,? Rhoad said.

At the opening ceremony for the festival held Wednesday, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., said the AIDS Memorial Quilt symbolizes a need for people ?to learn to live together.?

?The AIDS Quilt is saying we all live in the same house, the American house, the world house,? Lewis said. ?We can never, ever leave this house, so together we must build a world community that is free from disease and is finally at peace with itself.?

For those unable to get to the Mall to see the quilt in person, researchers from the University of Southern California created a website for the Names Project Foundation that launched at the festival Wednesday.

Organized alphabetically by first name, it allows users to see blocks dedicated to specific people, their name, city, date of birth and date of death if that information is available, and the block?s location among those laid out on the mall. Users can also post stories and comments alongside squares of the quilt displayed online. Those at the event can use it to locate specific panels laid out on the mall.

The standard size of a panel is 6 feet-by-3 feet. Eight panels make up one block, and on the Mall, four blocks were cable-tied together to form what they refer to as a patch, with an area of about 576 square feet, bigger than some D.C. studio apartments.

Many of the panels on the Mall indicate birth and death dates of the people they memorialize.

Festival visitor Nancy Bard of Seaford, Del., was surprised to see that she was born in the same year as many of those who had passed away.

Since the first cases of AIDS appeared in the United States more than 600,000 people diagnosed with the disease have died, according to the CDC.

?I think people have put their heart and soul into this,? Bard said, ?and I?m surprised. As I see them, you know it hits home how many people have and are dying from AIDS.?

Kelly Rivera Hart, a volunteer for the NAMES Project Foundation from San Francisco, contributed a panel this year in honor of his friend, Rick Flener, who succumbed to AIDS in 2002.

The panel for Flener is a blue rectangle with a disco ball in the left-hand corner made from shiny fabric Hart found in the Haight-Ashbury district. Clear letters written on the panel spell out one of Flener?s favorite jokes and qualities that friends and family remember about him: ?his sweet smile,? ??his warm friendship? and ?silliness.?

Hart became involved with HIV/AIDS activism when he received his diagnosis in 1992. He said finding out he had HIV woke him up.

?I thought, you know, I need to be doing something with my life,? Hart said.

After his diagnosis, Hart began taking medication to treat the disease, which he said gave him nerve damage, forcing him to give up running and going out dancing four nights a week.

But Hart remains optimistic.

?Things slow me down,? Hart said, ?I?m not letting them stop me.?

The Folklife Festival also contains an exhibit called ?Citified? that displays art from southeast Washington D.C. and one called ?Campus and Community,? celebrating colleges established by land grants in 1862. Those exhibits and the AIDS Memorial Quilt exhibit will run from June 27 to July 1 and July 4-8.

Houston Police Bicycle Relay Team Bike To California To Help Fight ...

On Tuesday, the Houston Police Department Relay Team left Discovery Green for San Diego, California in efforts to raise awareness about cancer. The trip is approximately 1,900 miles. The team plans on biking to California for seven days in efforts of raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The team is made up of nearly 30 HPD officers, several MD Anderson Cancer Center personnel, a host of leukemia survivors and relatives of patients.

According to the website hpdblog.com, ?Leukemia is the no. 1 child killing disease. Ten times as many adults as children are stricken with leukemia. Lymphoma rates have nearly doubled since the 1970?s. Police officers always want to ?catch a killer? and the Houston Police Department (HPD) Bicycle Relay Team?s goal is to ?arrest these killers? and accelerate The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s fight against blood cancers.?

The relay team is scheduled to arrive in San Diego, California on Monday, July 2, 2012. In the past 30 years, relay team participants have raised over $5.2 million for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and have biked over 67,500 miles.

Google Nexus 7 tablet is HD movie, book and game machine

9 hrs.

Just as?Google's developer conference was getting started, details of the company's?rumored Nexus 7 tablet emerged. As previously reported, it is a 7-inch tablet powered by a Nvidia?Tegra 3 quad-core processor?that will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and come in 8GB ($199)?and 16GB versions ($249). You can order today, but it ships in mid-July.

The display is true high-def ? 1280x800, so a bit better than 720p ? and there's a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera and microphone?for video chatting, though there's no rear-facing camera. (That's okay -- do you really take pictures with tablets?) It also has a micro?USB port, GPS, near-field communication and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There's no mention of an SD card slot for expanding the memory, however.

Not surprisingly, it was built by (and even branded)?Asus, the manufacturer that had already?made the most headway with quad-core gamer-friendly Android tablets. (See our video on the Transformer Prime below.)

Clearly, at a starting price of $199, the Nexus 7 is positioned to compete with the similarly 7-inch?Kindle Fire, rather than taking on the 9.7-inch?iPad (and the 10.6-inch Surface tablet from Microsoft).

Although they were careful to make the device comfortable to hold, with a textured back and light weight, some people just prefer to have a case anyway. And there is indeed a nice little $20 matte polymer cover in which you can ensconce your Nexus 7 and protect its screen. It's available in gray right now, but Asus sent out a picture showing it in a number of bright yet muted colors:

Meanwhile, Google pitched the Nexus 7 ? with its gryoscope and accelerometer ??as "a serious gaming device." By way of example, they showed off the action-heavy game "Horn" and the zombie shooter "Dead Trigger."?

And because, with all of those tablets, content seems to be the biggest incentive, Google is playing up the Play store, even granting early buyers $25 in Google?Play credit and "some great free content" including "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." Even if you don't think any of the "Transformers" films is truly "great," it is nice to see Google aggressively pushing content, even adding TV shows and magazines to their lineup. Tablet buyers need a reason to buy a tablet.?

UPDATE:?Google has made the above video operational again, along with the following links to the?8GB and 16GB versions on Google Play. Have at 'em!?

Board Games For Younger Children | Internet Contents

Playing board games with younger children presents a fun learning opportunity. These precious years are when kids learn so much. Playing kids board games can reinforce learning letters, numbers, and colors. Playing board games can also help develop memory and cognitive skills. A lot of board game makers have not only taken into account a fun factor with their games but the learning potential.

When choosing games for preschoolers, look for age appropriate board games. This most likely will be listed on the front of the board game box. Choose games that either have a theme or relate to something that is of interest to your child. If your child really likes animals, then an animal-themed game might hold their attention for longer. There are also many classic board games like Memory and Candyland that feature popular characters, too.

Playing pieces should be fairly large and shouldn?t present a choking hazard. Avoid games where tokens are used or games that contain small game pieces. All wooden games are sturdy and will be harder for children to break.

Before buying a board game for young children, check to see how long the playing time is for the game. Games that are relatively short are more likely to be finished before interest is lost. Board games that can be finished in under 15 minutes should be considered.

Look for board games that are not only age appropriate but that have simple rules. Games that have only one winning condition are best, too. Some games might have more than one way to win the game. It can be confusing to be able to win a game more than one way. This information may not be clearly noted on the board game box, so use house rules to set only one winning condition.

House rules can always be implemented into any game. Changing the rules for family play can speed up games, which hopefully will keep younger players engaged.

Award-winning games have been put through some test for fun and game play. There are plenty of awards given out to board games during the year, but just because a game receives an award doesn?t mean it?s necessary a game your kids would enjoy. Some awards are given to those board games submitted for review, so it might not be a complete inclusion to every game put out that year. Still, award-winning games can give some ideas of games to consider for your children.

Playing board games with younger children might have its challenges. Kids might become bored and not want to finish the game. If this happens, consider house rules to tailor the game to your child?s interest. Finding games that feature their favorite things can help to expand their attention span while playing. There are many board games for younger children. Read reviews and box labels to gain insight into what the game is all about before purchasing it. While board games can be a fun way to learn, it can also be a great family activity that can create memories to last a lifetime.

FutureDash EnergyBuddy hands-on (video)

We've seen more than a few energy monitors, but how many of them offer a pretty light show on the side? The EnergyBuddy -- first unveiled as a prototype at CES but just now inching toward a full launch -- is a complete home energy-tracking system brought to you by Cali-based startup FutureDash. Starting at $99, it keeps tabs on users' energy consumption with a square-shaped gadget that connects to your network via WiFi or Ethernet. The square glows red, yellow or green depending on how much electricity you're guzzling, and you have the ability to specify what qualifies as acceptable usage.

Naturally, the EnergyBuddy has a few peripherals in tow. A sensor installed at your electrical panel communicates with the rest of the system, and so-called Smart Plugs let you track the energy consumption of individual devices. The iPhone, iPad and desktop apps also offer some pretty in-depth stats, including dollars per hour spent on energy and a chart detailing consumption throughout the day. FutureDash is currently pushing the product on crowd-funding site Indiegogo, and though availability is TBD, you can take a peek at the system in our hands-on video below.

Joseph Volpe contributed to this report.

Stocks waver after upbeat housing data

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 10:45 a.m. ET: Stocks were wavering Tuesday after sharp losses in the prior session and as a Spanish bill auction met with falling demand.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index, released before the open, showed single-family home prices picked up for a third month in a row in April, suggesting the recovery in the housing market is gaining traction.

?This looks like a solid turn,? David Blitzer, head of the S&P Index Committee, told CNBC. ?It?s going to take a few months to cement all the evidence together, but it?s looking pretty good.?

Stocks fell on Monday to put the S&P 500 market index near break-even for June, as investors saw little reason to be optimistic about a European Union summit this week.

Spain's short-term borrowing costs nearly tripled at auction when the country sold 3.08 billion euros of its short-term debt, as the Treasury paid the highest rates to sell the paper since November.

Finance chiefs of the euro zone's four biggest economies will hold last-minute talks in Paris on Tuesday evening to discuss managing the crisis in the short term and proposals for closer long-term fiscal and banking integration in preparation for the summit later in the week.

According to a document prepared for the meeting, European leaders will discuss specific steps toward a cross-border banking union, closer fiscal integration and the possibility of a debt redemption fund.

"The market is going to pay attention and listen to any chatter that comes out over the next couple of days about what they think is going to come out of the summit," said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York.

"We are stuck in this predicament because the market is waiting for some real catalyst to push it one way or the other."

Cyprus became the latest euro zone member to ask for an aid package on Monday, adding to concerns about European leaders' ability to handle the crisis.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp is thinking of splitting into two companies.

Reuters contributed to this report.

University of Georgia ending 20-year pattern

Note: Missouri and Texas A&M officially join the SEC next Sunday.

When former University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley was given the additional role of athletic director in 1979, one of his first objectives was to adjust his late-season schedule.

"The three biggest rivals we've had for a long time are Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech, and at one time we played them all in a row," Dooley said. "We wanted to split that up, and we were able to do it."

Now the big question concerning Georgia's football schedule is which team annually will provide the early-season challenge.

The Bulldogs have opened Southeastern Conference play the past 20 seasons against South Carolina, but that run is coming to an end. Georgia's SEC opener this year will be at Missouri on Sept. 8.

It's unknown whether the league's new Tigers will remain Georgia's first SEC foe in 2013 and beyond or if South Carolina moves back or even another East Division team takes the spot. League officials are hoping to release more specifics about future scheduling later this summer.

"I think what you will see is probably a great deal of movement in those games," Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity said. "I'm just guessing here, but once our TV partners weigh in, I think providing traditional games that from a television standpoint are attractive would be part of the mix there.

"I think what you may see there is a variation on when you may play certain teams, and that will obviously be determined at a later date once TV has a chance to weigh in and meet with the commissioner to find out what is best for all concerned. I don't think there is going to be anything definite as far as when you play most of your teams."

In the past half century, Georgia has been linked with three annual early-season rivalries: Alabama, Clemson and South Carolina.

Alabama was Georgia's opening opponent from 1959 to '65, shredding the Bulldogs 31-3 in the '64 matchup at Tuscaloosa to spoil Dooley's debut as a head coach. The Bulldogs rebounded the following year to stun the Crimson Tide 18-17 in Athens, but the series was discontinued after the Saturday Evening Post claimed the '62 game, which the Tide won 35-0 in Birmingham, had been fixed by Alabama coach Bear Bryant and Bulldogs athletic director Wally Butts.

Bryant and Butts sued the Post, which in 1967 had to pay $3.06 million in damages.

"Because of the Saturday Evening Post scandal, the powers that be in the remaking of the league schedule decided it wouldn't be good for us to have Alabama as a normal rival," Dooley said. "So what they ended up doing, which wasn't very good, is make Ole Miss a rival or a constant game that we played every year. Alabama and Georgia would have been a natural rivalry.

"Any time you play a team from an adjacent state, it's big."

Clemson is not only from an adjacent state to Georgia but is within 90 minutes of UGA's campus except for autumn Saturdays. The Bulldogs waxed the Atlantic Coast Conference's Tigers throughout the 1960s and early '70s, but the teams split the eight 1974-81 meetings.

Georgia won the '80 matchup and Clemson the '81 encounter, and the victor in each of those seasons went on to win the national championship.

"We played them every year for a long period of time," Dooley said, "and it was a dangerous challenge because Clemson's two biggest rivals were South Carolina and Georgia, and Clemson was not among Georgia's top three or four. We had Auburn, we had Florida and we had Georgia Tech, and we had other teams in the conference. Clemson really got up for us."

Georgia and Clemson played each other through 1987 but have met just six times since, with expansions in both conferences greatly factoring into the infrequency of that series.

The Georgia-South Carolina game has played second fiddle to Florida-Tennessee for most of the past two decades, but the Gamecocks and Bulldogs have combined to win the past two SEC East titles. This year's matchup will take place in Columbia, S.C., on Oct. 6, four weeks after the Bulldogs visit the league's new Columbia (Mo.).

"They had to make a quick decision, and this may have been the best quick decision they could have made," Dooley said. "We were supposed to go to Alabama this season, so it's better to go to Missouri, no doubt about that, but the minus side is that an early game like that on the road could be very tough."
