Local group asks for answers about MEA Federal Credit Union robbery case

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Local NAACP leaders gathered on Gardenia Street in Columbus on Thursday asking for answers regarding a fatal shooting that happened nearly one year ago.

"The DA has her time and her cycle that she works on. That's not the purpose of this case. What we are talking about is we're talking about having our elected officials be accountable to the community. They owe us an update on what is going on," said Nate Sanderson, the President of the Columbus Chapter of the NAACP.

Almost a year ago, crime tape filled the same area after a Columbus Police Officer saw a masked man run out of the back door of the MEA Federal Credit Union.

Officials told us he chased after the alleged bank robber, Alrahiem Tolbert, and later found him in front of a home in a dark colored truck with another man, Tony Carr.

Both men were killed after an officer involved shooting. But, in previous interviews, friends and family said Carr would not have had any involvement in the robbery.

"My thoughts about what happened is that something is not right. He was not involved in this robbery. It was not in his character. I believe he was hijacked and held hostage in his own vehicle," said Schanta Newman, a friend of Carr.

GBI agents say after their investigation the case was turned over to District Attorney Julia Slater.

Slater says she will update the public in the near future, but cannot release anything before then.

"Although I've had many conversations with Tony Carr's family in this case, I will need to have a chance to discuss the specific decision and next step with them before I can release it to anyone else," said Slater.

Even though many are asking for answers, Slater says they are still working on the case.

"When the DA's office receives any case, especially one when there has been a loss of life, we take that very seriously. We're not going to rush to judgment. We are going to take our time, communicate with those that are involved in the case and make a good decision on it," said Slater.

Columbus police tell us the officer involved in the shooting is still on administrative leave.

They tell us he has not faced any disciplinary actions at this time.
